What to Expect During Your Newborn Session
Your baby is here — and you want to remember every tiny detail. Those curled-up toes, that little pout, the way they fit perfectly in the crook of your arm. A newborn session is one of the most meaningful investments you'll make as a new parent, and knowing what to expect beforehand makes the whole experience so much smoother (and more enjoyable!).
When Should You Book?
Newborns are best photographed in their first 5–21 days of life. During this window, babies sleep deeply, curl naturally into those adorable posed positions, and still have that fresh, squishy newborn look we all love. That said, I never turn away a newborn of any age — every stage is worth celebrating! The good news? You don't have to wait until baby arrives to book — in fact, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester so your spot is secured. Once baby is here, we'll confirm your exact session date.
How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?
Plan for anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. I know that sounds like a lot, but newborns run the show! We work around feeding times, diaper changes, and settling periods. There's no rush. The goal is a calm, comfortable environment for both baby and you — and that takes time.
What Should You Bring?
- Outfits for baby: I provide a wide selection of wraps, hats, headbands, and props, but if there's a special outfit or heirloom you'd love to include, bring it along!
- Siblings & parents: Want family shots? Absolutely! Wear neutral, muted tones — think creams, whites, soft grays, or dusty blues. Avoid bold patterns or logos.
- Comfort items: Plenty of milk and a pacifier if baby uses one.
What About the Space?
Sessions take place in my studio, which is kept warm — warmer than you might expect! Babies are most relaxed when they're cozy, so we keep the temperature up. I recommend wearing comfortable layers so you can adjust easily.
Will My Baby Cooperate?
Every baby is different, and that's completely okay. Some little ones sleep like champions the entire session. Others need more time to settle. I've worked with all kinds of newborns, and patience is always part of the process. Your job is simply to feed your baby, comfort them, and enjoy the experience. I handle the rest.
A newborn session isn't just about pretty photos — it's about preserving a chapter of life that passes in the blink of an eye. I'm so honored to be part of it.
